Oracle Intelligent Bots deliver faster answers to students when applying for university, boosting the student experience; solution implemented by Oracle’s Platinum Partner, Rubicon Red

Oracle Cloud World, Sydney, Australia

The process of finding out if you got into the university course of your dreams at your preferred educational establishment is a stressful time. Fortunately for some students, the process just got a whole lot easier, thanks to the successful pilot of a cloud-based, artificial intelligence (AI) solution provided by Oracle to the University of Adelaide, implemented by Oracle Platinum Partner, Rubicon Red.

At the end of each academic year, the University, which is consistently ranked in the top 1 percent of the world’s universities and recognised globally as a leading research establishment, is overwhelmed by enquiries from potential students. In South Australia, Year 12 students need support when their ATAR score – the number used to gain entry to university - is released. Students rush to contact the universities to which they’ve applied, to find out if they are eligible to receive bonus points. These can boost their final adjusted ATAR and may be the difference between them securing a place on the course they want or missing out.

University of Adelaide’s Associate Director, Prospect Management, Catherine Cherry, said, “During such a stressful and anxious time, we don’t want applicants having to wait in long queues on the phone to speak to us. It’s important that they can get their adjusted ATAR score as quickly as possible and start discussing what their results mean for them with their families, their friends and university of choice. Our Adjusted ATAR chatbot meant students didn’t have to wait – in the busiest hour we had approximately one user every five seconds! The response has been fantastic, with more than 60 percent of users rating their interaction as ‘Awesome’.”

The chatbot is accessed via social media from the University’s own Facebook messenger page. It enables potential students to get the answers they want, in their own time – without having to hold in phone queues or wait for an emailed response. Having been trained on questions used in previous years to help determine a student’s adjusted score, around context and using deep learning-based natural language understanding (NLU), the bot provides natural, conversational and personalised responses, and can even include comments like congratulations on their results.

Powerful machine learning also helps the bot pick things up and learn as it goes along, making it more powerful as usage increases. It also remembers previous conversations and their context, making it very easy to use and its responses more accurate.

On just the first day, prospective students conducted an estimated 2,100 unique conversations with the chatbot, a number far greater than anticipated. This led to 40 percent reduction in calls to the University’s enquiry service on results day – and more impressively, a 47 percent drop in calls during the critical first three hours. In turn, this reduced the average wait time for queries made via telephone – from an average of 40 minutes down to about 90 seconds. In addition, staff in the University’s call centre were freed-up to address more complex queries and handle its backlog of emails.

3 Ways National Pharmacies is Creating the Future of Work

In this latest Oracle video, Ryan Klose, General Manager, National Pharmacies discusses Oracle Cloud for digital transformation and continuous innovation with focus on Retail, SupplyChain, and DigitalHealth.

Read the complete blog post by Daryl Eicher | Sr. Principal Director, Product Marketing, Oracle Cloud Platform.

When National Pharmacies was looking for new ideas to tap into disruptive technologies and drive the consumer-grade engagement their 350,000 members have come to expect from much larger competitors, they went back to basics and started their IT transformation with API-first design thinking. Ryan Klose, Executive General Manager, spoke to me about his journey and how his conversations with executives, board members, and employees have evolved along the way.

The attention economy demands engaging experiences across devices and channels, data-driven business agility, and just enough of the right kind of governance to scale enterprise-class digital offerings. At National Pharmacies, that meant delivering a mobile loyalty app, modernizing their core applications, and extending the governance they needed to build trust in their digital future.

For everything he had to work with, a crystal ball wasn't readily available. So rather than try to predict the future of work at National Pharmacies, Ryan and a core team of technical and business architects decided to work with Rubicon Red and Oracle's Cloud Platform with Autonomous Services to make it happen every day.

Watch the latest video where Ryan Klose outlines his approach to accelerating project delivery by 5X.

National Pharmacies Oracle Innovation Award 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award 2017 Rubicon Red Billboard

ITNews: National Pharmacies uses in-store facial recognition

Authenticates members to self-serve via kiosks.

ITNews article by Sholto Macpherson following interviews at Oracle OpenWorld, San Francisco October, 2017.

National Pharmacies, which has branded chemists in three states, has introduced facial recognition technology to allow customers to perform a range of transactions using in-store kiosks.

The kiosks can be found in the approximately 100 branded pharmacies in South Australia, Victoria and NSW. They are physically Samsung tablets running Oracle's mobile cloud service (MCS).

When one of National Pharmacies' 350,000 registered customers approaches a kiosk, they can now authenticate using facial recognition.

The tablet's camera takes a photo, which is then passed to Amazon Rekognition, a deep-learning tool used for image analysis.

Rekognition converts the photo to attributes that National Pharmacies then matches with data about the customer held in an instance of Oracle identity management.

General manager Ryan Klose told Oracle Openworld 2017 that National Pharmacies' trials of Rekognition had convinced it of the need to use it in conjunction with Oracle technology, instead of as a standalone way to authenticate members.

“We had to deal with people using pictures of themselves on their phone to register their face. If you want to log on as me and you didn’t use any other technology (to verify the photo) then it would just work with a photo,” Klose said.

Klose said National Pharmacies had come up with "a number of techniques" to properly authenticate a member on its kiosks, though he declined to offer further details.

"If you’re innovating in security, the less predictable you are, the better," he said.

Through the in-store kiosks, customers are able to access seven different software platforms.

They can update their membership details, look up previous transactions and book an appointment with the pharmacist for bone density, diabetes or other type of health checkup.

Members can also use the kiosks to print off promotional vouchers sent to their mobile app, or to interact with other elements of the pharmacy's loyalty programs.

“Early on, we launched a mobile app but we found some members chose not to use mobile phones as their retail (interface)," Klose said.

"It wasn’t fair that they weren’t made these offers other than through the mobile" so the organisation expanded the ways it rewarded loyalty.

Customers that do use National Pharmacies' app are offered inducements when they are within range of a store.

The mobile app uses location services on Android and iOS and Oracle MCS to analyse the data and send vouchers to individual members if they are within a defined radius of a store.

Rubicon Red wins Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award 2017

Rubicon Red, a recognized global leader in Oracle Cloud Platform and a Platinum level member of Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), today announced it is honored to be recognized as a winner of the prestigious 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award for its Oracle Cloud Platform based solutions.

The Oracle Sustainability Innovation award recognizes customers who are committed to making environmental issues a priority across the enterprise and adopting unique ways to reduce costs and improve business efficiencies through innovative green practices using Oracle technology.

Rubicon Red uses Oracle Process Cloud Service to capture and manage requests to trial MyST—a DevOps solution that automates the end-to-end software release and platform configuration process for Oracle Cloud Platform-based solutions. The automated process replaces a previously manual process comprising emails, phone calls, or face-to-face meetings that could span up to four weeks.

Rubicon Red is now able to fulfil a trial request in less than one hour using Oracle Process Cloud Service to rapidly design and automate all aspects of the request process. Further, providing developers with immediate access to cloud-based full lifecycle process management and enterprise-quality tooling has cut Rubicon Red’s time to market by 40 percent.

From a sustainability perspective, Oracle Process Cloud Service allows Rubicon Red to significantly reduce power consumption and thereby energy costs. Oracle Process Cloud Service manages when a TestDrive environment is spun-up, automatically shutting it down during periods of in-activity, and capping usage to a maximum of 16 hours.

Since going live with Oracle Process Cloud Service for the MyST Trial process, Rubicon Red has seen a 90 percent reduction in compute use, whilst increasing the number of trial environments provisioned per week, by a factor of four. This is a real reduction in resource consumption of approximately 97.5 percent.

“By implementing Oracle Process Cloud Service for our MyST TestDrive, we are directly contributing to reduced energy consumption and costs. We are continually investing in ways to reduce our energy consumption and looking to Oracle Cloud Services to support these initiatives,” said Matt Wright, CTO/CFO, Rubicon Red. “We understand that environmental responsibility makes good business sense and our pro-active green practices deliver benefits not only to our bottom line, but also to our local communities and more broadly, the world we live in.”

With a focus on Smart Cities, Rubicon Red’s most recent eco-innovation is a cloud-based solution for Smart Parking, built using Oracle Cloud Platform Services including Oracle API Platform Cloud Service, Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service, Oracle Visual Builder Cloud Service, Oracle Mobile Cloud Service, Oracle Process Cloud Service, Oracle Application Container Cloud Service, and Oracle Integration Cloud Service. The solution is targeted at local councils who want to help people save time finding parking spaces. The solution, currently under development, will help local councils reduce traffic congestion during peak business hours and thereby improve and reduce carbon emissions.

“We are pleased to recognize our Platinum level member of Oracle PartnerNetwork, Rubicon Red, as a winner of the 2017 Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award,” said Jon Chorley, Chief Sustainability Officer and Group Vice President, Supply Chain Management Product Strategy & Product Lifecycle Management, Oracle. “Rubicon Red has implemented Oracle Cloud-based solutions in a way that improves its business efficiencies, reduces costs and energy consumption, and supports its on-going eco-transformation.”

Rubicon Red were excited to attend the awards presentation at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco this week, with Jeff Henley, Oracle Executive Vice-Chairman of the Board, and Jon Chorley, Oracle Chief Sustainability Officer.

Matt Wright discusses how Rubicon Red
Helps Customers on Journey to the Cloud

In a recent interview with Oracle, Matt Wright, CTO of Rubicon Red, discusses how they can help customers on their journey to the Cloud, with Oracle Cloud Platform.

Specializing in SOA and BPM, Rubicon Red has a proven track record helping customers address their integration and process needs. With the rapid growth in SaaS adoption, there is a growing need to provide integration as a cloud service, to tie all these systems together - cloud-based and on-premise.  Matt discusses how Oracle Integration Cloud Service (ICS) will enable simple integrations to bring SaaS-based solutions together, in an integrated way, far more rapidly than in the past.

In terms of application development, Matt says one of the exciting things about the cloud is the ability to enable citizen developers to use services such as Oracle Process Cloud (PCS) and Oracle Application Builder Cloud Service (ABCS) to quickly put together simple applications.

Mobility and Cloud go hand in hand. Matt says Oracle's Mobile Cloud Service (MCS) is perfect to allow you to build a mobile interface on top of ICS or PCS and deliver mobile apps rapidly and simply.  The biggest differentiator for MCS is the speed at which organisations can innovate to get new solutions in front of their customers - providing a competitive edge to deliver mobile solutions rapidly out to the market.

Watch the video to hear Matt discuss how Rubicon Red can help customers on their Journey to the Cloud with Oracle Cloud Platform.
