The process of finding out if you got into the university course of your dreams at your preferred educational establishment is a stressful time. Fortunately for some students, the process just got a whole lot easier, thanks to the successful pilot of a cloud-based, artificial intelligence (AI) solution provided by Oracle to the University of Adelaide, implemented by Oracle Platinum Partner, Rubicon Red.

At the end of each academic year, the University, which is consistently ranked in the top 1 percent of the world’s universities and recognised globally as a leading research establishment, is overwhelmed by enquiries from potential students. In South Australia, Year 12 students need support when their ATAR score – the number used to gain entry to university - is released. Students rush to contact the universities to which they’ve applied, to find out if they are eligible to receive bonus points. These can boost their final adjusted ATAR and may be the difference between them securing a place on the course they want or missing out.

University of Adelaide’s Associate Director, Prospect Management, Catherine Cherry, said, “During such a stressful and anxious time, we don’t want applicants having to wait in long queues on the phone to speak to us. It’s important that they can get their adjusted ATAR score as quickly as possible and start discussing what their results mean for them with their families, their friends and university of choice. Our Adjusted ATAR chatbot meant students didn’t have to wait – in the busiest hour we had approximately one user every five seconds! The response has been fantastic, with more than 60 percent of users rating their interaction as ‘Awesome’.”

The chatbot is accessed via social media from the University’s own Facebook messenger page. It enables potential students to get the answers they want, in their own time – without having to hold in phone queues or wait for an emailed response. Having been trained on questions used in previous years to help determine a student’s adjusted score, around context and using deep learning-based natural language understanding (NLU), the bot provides natural, conversational and personalised responses, and can even include comments like congratulations on their results.

Powerful machine learning also helps the bot pick things up and learn as it goes along, making it more powerful as usage increases. It also remembers previous conversations and their context, making it very easy to use and its responses more accurate.

On just the first day, prospective students conducted an estimated 2,100 unique conversations with the chatbot, a number far greater than anticipated. This led to 40 percent reduction in calls to the University’s enquiry service on results day – and more impressively, a 47 percent drop in calls during the critical first three hours. In turn, this reduced the average wait time for queries made via telephone – from an average of 40 minutes down to about 90 seconds. In addition, staff in the University’s call centre were freed-up to address more complex queries and handle its backlog of emails.

Highlights from Oracle OpenWorld 2017

Returning from the excitement of Oracle OpenWorld, it’s good to pause and reflect on the highlights of the major Oracle event of the year. There were a significant number of key announcements across the entire product stack - IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and DaaS. With our focus on IaaS and PaaS we have shared a few of the key take-aways below.

AI and Machine Learning

AI was really prevalent across a lot of the sessions with AI capabilities showing up across all parts of the Oracle Cloud stack including apps, development tooling and runtime infrastructure. The new Oracle AI Platform Cloud Service promises to help developers quickly create and deploy enterprise AI services to better understand the enterprise.

Oracle Mobile Cloud includes conversational AI through bots to automate human interactions using natural language, sentiment, speech, images, and machine learning.

Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud includes machine learning to enable self-driving, and self-repairing data warehousing and OLTP to improve security and reliability.

Through Oracle Analytics Cloud analysts can use machine learning to better visualize data and understand patterns.

Oracle Security and Management Cloud includes embedded machine learning to automate detection, prevention, and response to security breaches, performance anomalies, and vulnerabilities.

It was a hectic week for the Rubicon Red team lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend Oracle OpenWorld. OpenWorld is always a great opportunity to hear the latest announcements, meet up with our valued global customers, re-connect with our Oracle friends from development and product management, and connect with the extensive partner community headed up by Juergen Kress. It is also a great opportunity to make new contacts and ultimately build new partnerships and establish new friendships.

ITNews: National Pharmacies uses in-store facial recognition

Authenticates members to self-serve via kiosks.

ITNews article by Sholto Macpherson following interviews at Oracle OpenWorld, San Francisco October, 2017.

National Pharmacies, which has branded chemists in three states, has introduced facial recognition technology to allow customers to perform a range of transactions using in-store kiosks.

The kiosks can be found in the approximately 100 branded pharmacies in South Australia, Victoria and NSW. They are physically Samsung tablets running Oracle's mobile cloud service (MCS).

When one of National Pharmacies' 350,000 registered customers approaches a kiosk, they can now authenticate using facial recognition.

The tablet's camera takes a photo, which is then passed to Amazon Rekognition, a deep-learning tool used for image analysis.

Rekognition converts the photo to attributes that National Pharmacies then matches with data about the customer held in an instance of Oracle identity management.

General manager Ryan Klose told Oracle Openworld 2017 that National Pharmacies' trials of Rekognition had convinced it of the need to use it in conjunction with Oracle technology, instead of as a standalone way to authenticate members.

“We had to deal with people using pictures of themselves on their phone to register their face. If you want to log on as me and you didn’t use any other technology (to verify the photo) then it would just work with a photo,” Klose said.

Klose said National Pharmacies had come up with "a number of techniques" to properly authenticate a member on its kiosks, though he declined to offer further details.

"If you’re innovating in security, the less predictable you are, the better," he said.

Through the in-store kiosks, customers are able to access seven different software platforms.

They can update their membership details, look up previous transactions and book an appointment with the pharmacist for bone density, diabetes or other type of health checkup.

Members can also use the kiosks to print off promotional vouchers sent to their mobile app, or to interact with other elements of the pharmacy's loyalty programs.

“Early on, we launched a mobile app but we found some members chose not to use mobile phones as their retail (interface)," Klose said.

"It wasn’t fair that they weren’t made these offers other than through the mobile" so the organisation expanded the ways it rewarded loyalty.

Customers that do use National Pharmacies' app are offered inducements when they are within range of a store.

The mobile app uses location services on Android and iOS and Oracle MCS to analyse the data and send vouchers to individual members if they are within a defined radius of a store.

Rubicon Red wins Oracle Sustainability Innovation Award 2017

Rubicon Red uses Oracle Process Cloud Service to capture and manage requests to trial MyST—a DevOps solution that automates the end-to-end software release and platform configuration process for Oracle Cloud Platform-based solutions. The automated process replaces a previously manual process comprising emails, phone calls, or face-to-face meetings that could span up to four weeks.

Rubicon Red is now able to fulfil a trial request in less than one hour using Oracle Process Cloud Service to rapidly design and automate all aspects of the request process. Further, providing developers with immediate access to cloud-based full lifecycle process management and enterprise-quality tooling has cut Rubicon Red’s time to market by 40 percent.

From a sustainability perspective, Oracle Process Cloud Service allows Rubicon Red to significantly reduce power consumption and thereby energy costs. Oracle Process Cloud Service manages when a TestDrive environment is spun-up, automatically shutting it down during periods of in-activity, and capping usage to a maximum of 16 hours.

Since going live with Oracle Process Cloud Service for the MyST Trial process, Rubicon Red has seen a 90 percent reduction in compute use, whilst increasing the number of trial environments provisioned per week, by a factor of four. This is a real reduction in resource consumption of approximately 97.5 percent.

The solution is targeted at local councils who want to help people save time finding parking spaces.
